Battling Ropes : Trying Something New

Battling Ropes Rule!

Happy Tuesday!  I love Tuesday, because it’s the day to link-up with Jessica and Jill for #DishTheFit and talk about amazing things!  This week’s (optional) topic is “Try Something New”.  It’s earlaay in the year, so people are still venturing out of their comfort zones and trying new things.  At least, I think.  I mean, it is February now, so it’s possible that the doors of “new opportunities” are metaphorically shut for some, but DON’T stop believing!  Get up and try something new!

What’s new for me?

I haven’t tried too many new things over the past 6 months, well besides gaining weight and being stressed, but wait, those aren’t new things for me.  However, one thing I had been wanting to try is BATTLING ROPES!  I finally got to try them last week, and can I just say, HOLY CANNOLI I LOVE ‘EM!  Maybe I have a MMA Conditioning Specialization in my near future? I always need me some CEUs!   Okay, I need to calm down, but seriously look at how much fun you could be having right now!

you whip your ropes back and forth.

You can burn up to 115 calories in 10 minutes during a battle rope workout – that’s pretty awesome, too!  I would have taken selfies, but I was too busy whipping the floor with both hands!

What are battling ropes?

Battling ropes are 25-pound ropes that work out your back, legs, arms and core.  To use them you place them around a heavy beam or pole and pull them straight toward you. Standing with your feet hip-distance apart, pick up the end of each rope and bend your knees slightly and let her rip!

You can do loads of different moves to create a full range of motion, but regardless of how you work the ropes you will be sweating and feeling the burn!  Here’s a recommended list of battling rope moves, courtesy of DailyBurn.  This one is RIDICULOUSLY tough, but kicks your ass, big time!

I’m always so tempted to try the ropes at my gym but they’re always surrounded by very large jacked men .. and that’s it. So, I feel a little silly going over there with my noodle arms and seeing what happens!

I hear ya on that! I was visiting a gym that I don’t train at and being shadowing on them so I can’t relate entirely, but totally get it. Battle ropes are awesome though, so I totally encourage others to try them, or go the route I did, go to get trained on them (if possible!) 🙂

I had no idea battle ropes were 25 lbs, hahaha. That explains why it takes so much energy out of me when I’m trying to go all-out! An MMA Conditioning Specialization sounds super fun! *-*

Haha, yeah they are “sturdy”! I think they are so much fun, and they help with my exercise ADD! I know, I am so tempted to do the MMA cert. I think I’m a LITTLE ahead of myself, but I think it would be really fun!

Woah! That DairyBurn gif looks intense. The only new thing I’ve been trying recently is yoga. One of my goals this year is to improve my practice. It’s definitely harder than I thought it would be but I’m enjoying it 😀
    Good luck with the ropes!

Haha yeah, I’m not QUITE at that level of rope mastery, but I will get there! Yoga is tough, I really need to give it more of a try. When I’m doing it (and after) I feel great, but then I just get caught up with other activities. Good luck to you with yoga – I admire your dedication to practice it more. Thanks for reading!

Never done battling ropes, but we have some at the gym. I think after looking at those gifs, the ropes would totally beat me.

I really want to dance lately, but I want to make sure it’s a real want, and not just a passing trend for me.

Haha! The gifs are intimidating fo’ sho. Dancing is so much fun. I just freestyle when I’m not in the mood to do anything else. People walking past the Group X room think I’m crazy lol

OMG I remember when a trainer I worked with once introduced me to these ropes. We went outside and was like, HERE WE ARE… And I just saw these thick ass ropes on the ground.. I jumped over them and said, so is that what we are doing? And he was like UM NO… Picked them up, smacked em on the ground and in my brain I was like AWWWWWWW F this, I will die! LOL!

I won’t lie, you definitely feel it the next day …everywhere! Though, that means it’s working you hard! They are totally intimidating, but SO much fun. 🙂

I had a free training session at my old gym and ropes were one of the things they had me do. Oh man did they burn. I would definitely do some again if I had access to them!

Awesome – I’m glad you liked them, Erin! The gym I train at right now doesn’t have them so I connected with another one that does. It’s worth the half hour drive just to use them, in my opinion! I love a challenging workout and battle ropes definitely deliver that!

WHOA!!! That looks awesome. I have not seen those yet, but then again I haven’t stepped foot in a gym in over 3 years so that could be why too. I have mostly been working out at home over the years, but my fiance and I are talking about getting a gym membership soon. Hopefully a gym where I can try this at! So cool!

It would be well worth it. I’m definitely an instant fan of this! I like to work out at home too, but being a trainer sometimes I feel bad about “abandoning” the gym. I don’t think I could fit these in my home though lol 🙂

That’s so cool! I’ve seen those on The biggest loser and thought it looked so tough. I wouldn’t know where to go to try them though.

There’s a lot of gyms that don’t carry them. (Most) martial arts facilities have them, though. They are pretty rad so they should clear out some room for them at every gym!

I tried ropes for the first time last summer at blogfest and it’s so much harder than it looks! Loved it! With a home gym it’s not really an option but if I could I would workout with the ropes regularly.

Thanks for linking up to dish the fit!

Love this, Erin! And, way to go! I just tried these this past summer and WHEW! BIG BURNERS. ABS, SHOULDERS, ARMS….oh my gosh. Luckily, I did it with a friend and we were laughing SO hard. Such a fun fitness moment. And the guy in that vid is major buff. Whoa. But, I love how he added half burpees in between. Can’t wait to try that. Thanks for the inspiration!

BIG BURNERS is right! I was just picturing what the initial experience of using them would have been like if I had of been with one of my friends lol. I can imagine one of us would have busted into “whip it” by Devo or something haha!
